Geography: Tristar Athletes Southwest

State: USA, Torrance California

Fun facts: My first athletic challenge was in 6th grade. I rode my little BMX bicycle from Torrance to Marineland (in Palos Verdes) straight up Hawthorne Blvd. That was several thousand feet of climbing, wearing jeans. I put PB&J sandwiches and a jug of water in my backpack.

I did it specifically because a neighborhood kid claimed he had done it and that there was no way that I could do it. I took pictures of each intersection that I had to stop for red lights along the way, using my little 110 film pocket camera. When I showed that kid my photographic evidence, he admitted he was "just joshing me" and that I was a "crazy MF" for having done it. However, he never told me I couldn't do something ever again. Since then I have spent my entire life, crushing naysayers.

The most difficult part of that bike ride was actually the descent. My BMX bike had a coaster brake, which started smoking and burnt up on the descent. So I had to slow the bike with my shoes. Then I burnt through the heels of both of my shoes slowing down during the rest of that descent. That was terrifying.

  • Current training tactics: I need to become a better (faster swimmer), and I need to continue to increase my wattage on the bike.

  • Your favorite training, camp or racing memory: Tour of The Gila. It's so very tough!

  • MENTORSHIP team member

  • Other : I was born in Taiwan and spent my early childhood there. Being bi-racial, I've never really quite fit in anywhere. Thus I am more open to considering different possibilities, which is how I got into triathlon.
