Timberman 2010 Race Report

Swim:  rough conditions, very choppy and felt like a “messy” swim.   I could not get a rhythm and sorta knew within 3-5mins of start that it was not going to be a great one.   Swallowed a ton of water.   I couldn’t keep a draft and was bouncing up and down with the swells.   Swam off course once and decided I didn’t want to waste energy fighting this so just settled in and did what I could.     Never felt “out of control” but it was not smooth and I kept telling myself that it was not ability related!!

T1: Smooth.   Not really sure I could have done anything to make it really any faster except literally move faster J

Bike:  took first 15miles to get my legs.   Was a little nervous about that and was in some pain climbing the hills in the first 10miles.   Although the course definitely felt less challenging than it did in 2009.   Caught a great tail wind on the flat stretch out and was averaging 22mph on that part.   Got to half way point and was at 1:29 (had given myself a 1:35 pace).   Way back was good except for not being able to pee on bike (couldn’t do it for some reason!) which made the last 10miles tough.   I definitely think I could have gone harder on bike with potentially not serious repercussions for run.   I was always in control and HR was always in zone 3.   Nutrition was spot on also (additional notes on this below).

T2: Soaked sneakers and a missing gu (next to my sneakers) delayed me slightly.

Run: Don’t think I went out too hard (ran my 1st loop with Stackman) and we averaged 7:50-8:10min/miles which is what I had calculated.   Legs definitely started to feel heavy towards end of 1st loop.   I dropped back slightly (8:20 to 8:30min/mile) just to pace myself and legs started to feel pretty heavy toward mile 10.   Lower back was in complete shambles/tight/pain which has never happened to me before.   I tried to pick up pace for last 4 miles but didn’t as much as I would have liked.   Still pleased with a 1:50 run split but think a 1:45 is within reach!!

Nutrition: pretty spot on.   Slightly bloated belly feeling towards end of (probably due to liquids on bike).   Stayed very hydrated and never fell behind.   Here is the breakdown:

·        Pre race: 1 roctane gu; Gatorade/water bottle; 1 sodium tablet

·        Swim: 1 bottle of carbopro/heed; 1 bottle of Gatorade endurance; 1 water bottle; half power bar; 1 gu; 2 sodium tablets

·        Run: 1 gu at start; 4 blox throughout rest of run; sipped Gatorade endurance/water at every other aid station.

·        3 sodium tablets total

·        Post race: zico; banana

Swim = 39:54
T1 = 7:34
Bike = 3:49 (including a bathroom stop/flat fix/ridic hills!)
T2 = 7:31 (included slipping in the mud and a bathroom break)
Run = 1:53:44

Comments:
Swim = took a while to get a rhythm going; draft was tough; everyone all over the place and very spread out; the "across" part of the rectangle had us swimming into the current.  I felt great throughout entire swim, thought my time would have been a little lower to be honest..... (ie: 37/38 range)

Bike = conditions were just ridiculous.  A race official said that since this was the first year Mooseman was an official "MDOT" 70.3 race, they changed the course and realized that making us do those hills 2x was tough.  Said that they'd probably change it again for next year.  I was definitely slow on the bike (and felt slow) so feel like there is work to do here despite the conditions.  Headwinds/downpour/crashes everywhere.  I'd like to get my bike to a 3:05-3:10 for Timberman.

Run = felt great off bike (pacing strategy was perfect for me).  Run was in torrential downpour with lots of mud flats.  Tendonitis definitely kicked in on mile 9 so wonder if that slowed me down a bit.  My garmin had me doing 8:05/8:15mm pace up until that point.  Otherwise felt pretty strong.  HR was in check, didn't stop at all (ran the entire time) so think there is room for positive results here.  I'd like my run to be 1:45-1:48 for Timberman.

 Nutrition = def got it right in terms of no bonk, feeling strong the entire day.  Perpetuem is my friend!!  It definitely helped that the run was not in heat/humid conditions (stayed cool etc).  Need to work on the bloated belly feeling on the run (got through it but was not too comfortable on run)
